Meijer - Walker

Introduction

Part of the series to visit and review all the Rivian Adventure Network sites in Michigan, post the upgrades to all sites to support all electric vehicles.  Site visit conducted on September 28, 2025.

The Meijer – Walker station was the 2nd charging stop on this trip.  At this location the Rivian units are placed next to the Electrify America chargers. (Originally opened September 2023.  This station opened to all electric vehicles in April 2025).

Accessibility

The Meijer site is in the parking lot of this super-center business.  The site is 0.7 miles from I-96 at exit 30.  South from the exit on the northern edge of the large parking lot. Six stalls with most of them blocked with signs preventing pull through.  The stalls on the end are able to support pull through.

Car-related services (windshield cleaning, air): Meijer gas station in the same parking lot.

Concentration

This is the latest standard 6 station layout for Rivian.  There are several pull-in stalls and a pull through stall on the store side of the power cabinet equipment for those pulling a trailer.  The longer cables on the second-generation hardware remove most concerns about cables reaching charge ports.  There is a benefit that there are 6 units, this distributes the power across enough stalls to keep traffic flowing.

Location

This site supports I-96 and is close enough to potentially support US-131.  At about 165 miles to Detroit and 180 miles to Chicago.  North 140 miles from here along US-131 is Traverse City.

Speed

The Rivian sites follow a standard layout for speed/power.  There are six dispensers that are configured in trios(A/B/C).  Two power cabinets can then each split power between three linked dispensers.  Each set share a combined 300kW output.  The dispensers have liquid cooled cables supporting 500A.  Unless a site is full, most vehicles on the market today are going to arrive and be provided all the power they can request.  At this site the transformer is 1500 kVA. I am not sure if this is shared with the co-located Electrify America station, but either way it should provide plenty of power for the site.

Summary

This is the only site on this trip that I chose not to charge.  The cost here just doesn’t make sense with the competition in the area.  $0.67 versus $0.56 at the Electrify America one row over in the parking lot, or $0.50 at the Red E just down the road.  While I was here there was a Hummer SUV that was having difficulty charging at the Electrify America chargers.

After I completed the site reviews here, I went down the road to charge at the second open NEVI site in Michigan.  When I arrived there was a new Ioniq 5 plugged in and charging with a CCS to J3400 adapter.  I tried to initiate the charge and pay by the application, but the session stopped as soon as it started.  The Ioniq 5 driver advised that the station was still in free mode and a simple unplug and re-plug started my car charging.

I did not charge at this location, because it was not cost competitive.
