Introduction
This is a site review from my trip to cover the lake shore route from the middle of the mitten northward.
Business/Location Name | Ellens Corners |
Address | 6052 M-115, Mesick, MI 49668 |
Network | EV Connect |
Station Details | 2 Dual Output 120kW Zerova DS Units |
Cost | $0.49/kWh |
The third planned stop of day two of this trip was in Mesick, MI. This site at the intersection of M-37 and M115.
(This station opened in October 2023).
Accessibility
This site is at the corner of the intersection. The units are placed on the road side of the parking lot making them easy to spot from the road. The spots are marked for EV charging only. The wide open space of the parking lot allows for any parking orientation needed.
Amenities
For a destination stop, and public parking site, the surrounding amenities are limited.
Dining options include: Jennifer’s Roundabout Restaurant
Shopping options include: Ellens Corners Convenience Store
Car-related services (windshield cleaning, air): Shell Gas Station here
Concentration
Here there are 2 dispensers that each have 2 connectors that both can be used at the same time for a total of 4 charging ports. The parking lot here is very large allowing for parking at the charging station in any orientation that is needed. The density here matches current and expected current needs.
Location
This site is located to provide coverage to the northwestern lower peninsula. The parking lot offers lots of space and limited traffic while charging. From here it is about 30 miles north to Traverse City, 113 miles south to Grand Rapids and 70 miles east to Grayling.
50 Mile Radius:
150 to 200 Mile Range Estimate:
Speed
This is a new type of equipment for this trip. The two units here are Zerova DS series models, with the one I charged on have a label indicating that it was manufactured in April 2023. The name plate indicates that the maximum output is 120kW per pair of outputs. The cables are air cooled with a 300A limit, but that matches well the 120kW output. Strangely the EV Connect App lists these as 180kW units, but don’t think these can output that much power. I managed to maintain around 100kW, but this was mostly due to the battery not being fully up to temperature. There is plenty of power on site with a 500kVA transformer.
Summary
I arrived at this stop with 61% battery and 174 miles remaining on the GOM (guess o’ meter). I had averaged 4.0 miles/kWh on the drive. With temperatures in the upper 50’s I didn’t need the HVAC, and the road speeds were lower, resulting in great efficiency. Using the EV Connect app to start the charge, the only trick is to make sure to select the correct charging unit connector. This was a great stop for the area and I would stop here again in the future.
What I paid for this stop:
Total Cost: $9.87
Total kWh: 20.135kWh
Time: 12 Minutes
Average Charge Speed: 100.675 kW (Calculated)
Cost per kWh: $0.49
