Chase Bank – Southfield

 Introduction

In the past I have done dedicated trips to review the EVgo expansion in metro Detroit.  For this trip I combined stops at the 3 new or significantly upgraded sites.  These new and expanded sites improve the local EVgo network.  Site reviews from July 7, 2026

Chase Bank

28660 Northwestern Hwy, Southfield, MI 48034

EVgo

6 Stalls (3 dispensers with 2 ports, total: 1000kW site power)

$0.51/kWh 0:00-05:00, $0.55/kWh 05:00-10:00 and 18:00-24:00, $0.61/kWh 10:00-18:00

While most banks have small parking lots, this is a larger bank with more parking spaces to support chargers.  The Chase here connects both Northwestern Hwy and 12 Mile Rd making for convenient neighborhood charging.  (This station opened in February 2026).

Accessibility

This site is on Northwestern Hwy.  Based on exit routings this is between exit 7 and exit 10 on I696.  Coming from the east 2.6 miles from exit 10.  Coming from the west 1.2 miles from exit 7. The chargers are in the parking lot on the south side of the bank, closest to Northwestern Hwy.  There are parking signposts at the front of each space, eliminating what could potentially be pull through spaces; not trailer friendly.  There is one space that is larger in size and specifically designated as the accessible charging location.

Amenities

Dining options: McDonald’s, Mr. Joe’s Sports Bar, Soupdive, Midtown Smoke House, Hunan Town, Burger King

Car-related services (windshield cleaning, air): None

Concentration

This site has 3 dispensers, and each can charge two cars at the same time, for a total of 6 stalls/ports. The 350kW dual charging units are pull up beside.  Be sure to park with the charging port closest to the dispenser.  The are polls that prevent pull through parking.  The stalls furthest from the building seem to provide the most flexibility in parking positions.

Location

This site is close to I-696 and thus is available to support any vehicles traveling this corridor that need a high-power charge.  This location can support travels to Port Huron, Lansing, and the Detroit Metro area.  The problem with this site for travel is the heavy local usage, which means that the site might be full depending on when you are travelling.  The site is also relatively close to local amenities that would make this a reasonable stop if you were charging here regularly due to lack of access where you live.

Speed

EVgo is supporting maximum CCS charging speeds.  The high-power Delta units are capable of both max 1000V and can do 500A.  This site supports up to 350kW at each port, however the single high power units limit power to the second cable when 2 vehicles are charged at the same time.  This site is well equipped to handle both road trip traffic and neighborhood charging. The made in March 2025 (Power Cabinet) and November 2025 Dispensers, Delta charging units here should be available to serve the electric car community for years to come.  At this site the transformer is 750kVA, well undersized for the total site power.  If many vehicles are plugged in at the same time the speeds to each may be significantly reduced to stay under this site power limit.  However, some 8 stall Tesla sites are sharing this same power.

Summary

While this is a newer site, it seems to consistently have some reliability issues.  One of the three dispensers on this visit was showing the red light on top indicating some sort of fault.  Unfortunately, these dispensers have only a single indicator for both ports, so even if one port is working and the other is faulted it looks like from afar that the whole dispenser is not available.  Nice to see larger sites like this come it, be used and support the surrounding community.  We need to see more reliability from EVgo.  Also, the basic pricing structure is very expensive and includes a $1 connection fee, unless you pay a monthly subscription fee.

Being the first stop of this trip, no need to charge at this location.
